I swear I'm not going to be saying this at the beginning of every blog post for the next year, but I cannot believe that we are already into February! I feel at this point in 2017 with everything that is happening in the world it is difficult for me to dive straight in without mentioning what has been going on. I don't feel that NevNYC is the appropriate platform for me to express how I truly feel about what is happening across the globe, but all I will say is witnessing and seeing these protests happening across the globe has been nothing but inspiring. Unity, strength, empathy, compassion and fighting for what is right incites progress. And although I feel I am not educated enough nor do I have the ability to write my personal thoughts on what is happening, I will always fight in the ways I know how, through art, through empathy and through compassion.
I decided that this year at the beginning of every new month I would check in and talk about some of my favorites from the previous month. I thought this would be a fun way to discuss some of the things that I have been using, places I have been visiting in NYC and things that I have been watching! So without further ado:
1. Jo Malone London - Lime, Basil & Mandarin
I can't begin to tell you guys how amazing this smells. When it comes to scents I really love fresh smells but with a lot of strength behind them. I'm always looking for scents that are durable and after a quick spritz in the morning, are still going to be prominent by the end of the day. There isn't many aftershaves out there that serve this purpose. Even other Jo Malone fragrances I've had in the past have smelt wonderful for a few hours, that was until I came across the Lime, Basil and Mandarin scent. I actually got a sample of this back in 2014 and preferred it to the fragrance I had purchased, I then got it as a gift the following Christmas and this year when I was home I was actually gifted the same scent again. Scent's are tricky for me as I always like to change them up, each scent I've had in the past I have associated with a certain memory or time in my life. The Lime, Basil and Mandarin scent for me now is my New York scent, I've worn it as long as I've known Gino and it just has so many great times associated with it. The scent itself is extremely fresh and long lasting and the strength of the lime scent leaves me feeling confident that it won't run out at the end of the day. Since I got this for Christmas and have been wearing it all over again I couldn't not include this!
2. Sephora Super Supreme Body Butter
Okay now this product has been in my life since I was around 12 years old. My childhood best friend Adele and I went to her house in Spain for a vacation when we were younger and I was gifted this moisturiser for the first time. I know, 12 year old me was ahead of the time when it came to post-shower body moisturisation. Don't ask. But since then I have constantly repurchased this body butter. This actual tub of it is one of 5 I bought in 2014 and this is the last one of the bunch so I am due a restock. Currently Sephora only sells this product in the "Shea Butter" scent which I recently went in to check out and I can safely say it smells DIVINE! Highly recommend!
3. Wish Formula Bat Eye Mask
I am someone who has skin that is super-sensitive to masks and cleansing pads so I have to be careful when trying new products. When I got the Bat Eye Masks from Wish Formula I could begin to see a noticeable difference in redness and fatigue around my eyes. Now whenever I wake up and feel swollen or blotchy, I crack open one of these bad boys and I am good to go! The perfect emergency mask, and I also feel some what super-hero-esque having a bat on my face.
1. Scrappy Little Nobody - Anna Kendrick
You will always find me with an autobiography on the go, something about the first person narrative I really respond to so when I got "Scrappy Little Nobody" I was so excited to jump on in and read about Anna Kendricks life. I had seen a few movies with Anna Kendrick in (Twilight Series, Pitch Perfect, Camp, Into The Woods) the standards really, but it was so cool to read about Anna's story to success. With many childhood stints on Broadway, surviving in LA and award show season from the point of view of a quirky girl, "Scrappy Little Nobody" leaves no stone un-turned when it comes to being a struggling actor. #tooreal. If you've ever encountered the hilarity that is Anna's Twitter page then you will love this book. A really breezy read with the sense of humor of a drunken sailor, I highly recommend for a light-hearted and fun commuter read!
One thing that has become more and more a part of my daily routine is "notebooking". I guess essentially its a way of me playing with some of the techniques of Bullet Journaling but in a way that works for me. I was gifted this wonderful Gilmore Girls "Luke's Diner" notebook by my Granny at Christmas and wanted to fill it with lists and things I wanted to achieve throughout the year. Of course I can't go into too much depth in regards photos of my notebook as a lot of it is private but I wanted you guys to get a glimpse at the way in which I've formatted some of my pages. I am LOVING lists at the moment and have found that the act of ticking off a list really helps me get through the day. At times when I've felt anxious in the past month I have found that sitting down and writing down up to 20 "to-do" acts that help me really map out what I have coming up that day, even planning things as simple as "commute home" or "cook dinner". I had a very specific set of goals for 2017 so listing out everything I want to achieve allows me to track progress and see out the goals. You can see in the picture I'm working on a list of movies I haven't watched in years or that I have never seen so I am LOVING going through it! In the future I will possibly do a more in-depth look at how I organise my days, but as I feel my way around notebook planning, this will do for now!
I CANNOT BEGIN TO TELL YOU HOW GOOD THESE TWO TV SHOWS ARE. Okay let's start with The OA. If you haven't heard of The OA then get Netflix for your smartphone and download it so you can watch it on your commute, do it. NOW! I didn't really know what to expect with this show but I can tell you that you will enjoy it. It takes one or two episodes to really warm to what is happening and trust me you will be asking a LOT of questions! "What does OA stand for?" "Where was Prairie this whole time?" "Wait she's Russian?" "Why did the title sequence start 45 minutes into episode 1" "WHAT IS HAPPENING?" But I have left Season 1 with a definite hunger for MORE. Go forth, watch it! Now "A Series of Unfortunate Events" is a book series I first read when I was around 8 or 9 years old and it is one of my all time favourites. With the Jim Carey film, I'm not going to lie, even with Meryl Streep in the cast, I was disappointed. My 9 year old brain had imagined something completely different and I felt the dark essence of the film had been somewhat overlooked. By the end of episode 1 of the new Netflix Series I. WAS. SOLD. The new TV series plays homage to the books and even pays attention to the smaller details we simply lost in the movie. Season 1 covers the first 4 books (while the film only covered the first 3, then gave it a happy ending) the series has 13 books in total to give you some perspective and let me tell you, I cannot wait for more series. Definitely be sure to check it out for witty dark-humor and lots of adventures with the Baudelaires as they escape the clutches of the EVIL Count Olaf!
These are just some of the things I have been absolutely loving this month and I really hope you enjoyed this new type of blog. I really think that as the year goes on it'll be fun to see what new things I'm loving and see where it takes us all in this new series. I hope you all had a wonderful January and are implementing all the positive changes you wished for as you saw in the New Year. 2017 is the year of MAKING THINGS HAPPEN and the power is in YOUR hands!!
